Background
Tip = bill x percentage / 100, and the total is bill plus tip. Tipping norms vary by country: 15-20% is common in the United States, while in much of Europe and Asia service is often included or a small round-up is customary.
With round-up, the tool raises the total to the next whole unit and treats the difference as extra tip, so the effective percentage ends slightly higher than the one you chose.
Common mistakes
- Tipping on a total that already includes a service charge.
- Applying the tip percentage to the after-tax amount when local custom is to tip on the pre-tax amount.
