About Bill Splitter
Splitting a group bill fairly gets complicated fast once tax, tip, and items only one person ordered enter the picture. This calculator divides the shared portion of the bill evenly across everyone, adds each person's individual extras on top of their share, and then applies tax and tip as a single combined percentage to each person's subtotal.
How to use Bill Splitter
- Enter the shared bill total and the number of people.
- Add any items that only one person ordered so they pay for those on top of their share.
- Set the combined tax and tip percentage.
- Read what each person owes and copy the breakdown to share in your group chat.
Worked examples
Input: Shared bill 120, 4 people, 20% combined tax and tip
Result: Each person pays 36.00 (30.00 plus 6.00 tax and tip).
Input: Shared bill 100 for 2 people, plus one person's extra 20 dessert, 10% tip
Result: Shared share is 50 each. The person with the dessert pays 77.00 and the other pays 55.00.
Background
Splitting evenly works when everyone ordered similar things. When they did not, the fair approach is to split shared items equally, assign individual items to the person who ordered them, and apply tax and tip in proportion to each person's subtotal.
Applying a percentage to each person's own subtotal, rather than splitting a lump-sum tip equally, is what keeps the person who ordered only a salad from subsidising a table's wine.
Common mistakes
- Applying tip to the bill and then again to a per-person total, which double-counts it.
- Splitting everything equally when one person ordered far more than the rest.
- Forgetting that tax is sometimes already included in menu prices.
