About Savings Calculator
This studio savings calculator projects how savings and investment balances compound over time with initial lump sums and recurring monthly contributions across 160+ world currencies.
How to use Savings Calculator
- Enter your starting balance and your monthly contribution.
- Enter the expected annual return and the number of years.
- Read the final balance, total contributed and total growth.
- Compare scenarios by changing the contribution or the time horizon.
Worked examples
Input: Starting balance 5,000, 500 added monthly, 6% a year, 10 years
Result: Roughly 91,000, of which 65,000 is your own money and about 26,000 is growth.
Input: Same plan for 20 years
Result: A much larger balance because growth compounds on growth. Time matters more than the rate.
Background
Savings grow through two forces: the money you add and the return earned on the existing balance. The return compounds, so each period's growth is calculated on a larger base.
The tool assumes a constant return. Real returns vary year to year, so treat the result as an illustration, not a forecast. Inflation reduces what the final amount can buy.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a high return is guaranteed. Use a conservative rate for planning.
- Ignoring inflation and fees, which reduce real growth.
- Stopping contributions during market falls, which removes the benefit of regular investing.
