About Compound Interest Calculator

Compound interest is interest calculated on the initial principal, which also includes all of the accumulated interest from previous periods. This studio calculates the exponential growth of your investments across 160+ world currencies, supporting customizable recurring contributions, flexible compounding intervals (daily to annual), and exportable schedules.

How to use Compound Interest Calculator

  1. Enter the starting principal and the annual interest rate.
  2. Set the time horizon in years and choose how often interest compounds, from daily to annually.
  3. Optionally add a recurring contribution to see how regular deposits change the outcome.
  4. Read the final balance, total interest earned and the growth schedule, and pick your currency.

Worked examples

Input: Principal 10,000, rate 7% a year, 10 years, compounded monthly, no contributions

Result: Final balance about 20,096.61, of which about 10,096.61 is interest.

Input: Same inputs, compounded annually

Result: Final balance about 19,671.51. More frequent compounding gives a slightly higher result.

Background

Compound interest follows A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where P is the principal, r the annual rate as a decimal, n the compounding periods per year and t the years. Interest earned in each period is added to the balance and earns interest itself in later periods.

The result is a projection from fixed assumptions. Real investments have changing rates, fees and taxes, and none of these are modelled here.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the rate as a decimal (0.07) instead of a percentage (7).
  • Comparing a nominal rate with an effective annual yield. Different compounding frequencies make the same nominal rate yield different amounts.
  • Ignoring inflation, fees and tax, which reduce the real return.
