About Profit and Loss Calculator

Profit or loss on a sale is the difference between total costs and total revenue. This studio calculator provides complete financial transparency across 160+ world currencies, tracking not only direct item cost but also auxiliary overheads, shipping costs, and platform fees.

How to use Profit and Loss Calculator

  1. Enter the cost price per unit and the selling price per unit.
  2. Add quantity, shipping, platform fees or other overheads if they apply.
  3. Read profit or loss, profit margin, markup and total revenue versus total cost.
  4. Change the selling price to find the price that gives your target margin.

Worked examples

Input: Cost 100, selling price 140, quantity 1

Result: Profit 40.00, markup 40%, margin 28.57%.

Input: Cost 100, selling price 90

Result: Loss 10.00, margin -11.11%.

Background

Profit = revenue - total cost. Margin = profit / revenue x 100. Markup = profit / cost x 100. The same sale gives different numbers for the two: a 40% markup is only a 28.57% margin.

Margin never exceeds 100%, while markup can. Many pricing mistakes come from setting a margin target and applying it as a markup, which leaves profit lower than planned.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up margin and markup when setting prices.
  • Leaving out shipping, fees and returns, which can erase a thin margin.
  • Calculating per-unit profit and forgetting fixed costs that apply to the whole batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my business's currency?
Yes, select any world currency from over 160+ currencies using the dropdown.
What is the difference between Profit Margin and Markup?
Markup is the percentage added to the cost price to determine the selling price. Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. A 50% markup on a $100 item gives a $150 selling price, which represents a 33.3% profit margin.
How does the calculator account for extra expenses?
Extra expenses (such as shipping, packaging, transaction fees, and marketing) are added directly to the unit cost price to establish your true cost base before calculating profit, margin, and markup.
Can I download a screenshot of my calculation?
Yes, click the Screenshot button to export a high-DPI PNG image of your profit and loss evaluation.
