About Discount Calculator

Discounts reduce the retail cost of items during sales and promotional events. This studio computes multi-tier stacked discounts (e.g. 20% off + 10% coupon), incorporates sales taxes, and supports wholesale bulk quantities across 160+ world currencies.

How to use Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the original price and the discount percentage.
  2. Add a second discount, such as a coupon, if it stacks on top of the first.
  3. Add a sales tax rate and quantity if you want the final checkout amount.
  4. Read the sale price, the amount saved and the total after tax.

Worked examples

Input: Price 80, discount 20%, then a further 10% coupon

Result: After 20% the price is 64.00, after the extra 10% it is 57.60. Total saved is 22.40, an effective discount of 28%, not 30%.

Input: Price 200, discount 15%

Result: Sale price 170.00, saving 30.00.

Background

A discount is applied as price x (1 - d/100). Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 20% followed by 10% leaves 0.8 x 0.9 = 72% of the price, so the effective discount is 28%.

Whether tax is calculated before or after the discount depends on the store and region. In most retail settings tax applies to the discounted price.

Common mistakes

  • Adding stacked percentages together. Two successive discounts are always worth less than their sum.
  • Forgetting that some coupons apply to the original price rather than the already-reduced price.
  • Comparing sale prices without the tax and shipping that apply at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my country's currency?
Yes, select any world currency from the dropdown with accurate symbols and localization.
How are stacked discounts calculated?
Stacked discounts are applied sequentially: the first discount is subtracted from the original price, and the second coupon percentage is applied to the already-reduced subtotal.
Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?
In most jurisdictions, sales tax applies to the final discounted subtotal, not the original MSRP.
