About GST Calculator

Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Value Added Tax (VAT) are consumption taxes applied to goods and services worldwide. This studio handles both forward (Add Tax) and reverse (Remove Tax) calculations accurately across 160+ world currencies, supports CGST/SGST splits, international tax presets, and itemized multi-line invoices.

How to use GST Calculator

  1. Choose Add Tax to add GST or VAT to a net price, or Remove Tax to extract it from a gross price.
  2. Enter the amount and pick a rate preset or type your own.
  3. Read the net amount, tax amount and gross amount. For GST, view the CGST and SGST split.
  4. Use the itemized mode when an invoice has lines with different rates.

Worked examples

Input: Add 18% GST to 1,000

Result: Tax 180.00, total 1,180.00. The split is CGST 90.00 and SGST 90.00.

Input: Remove 18% GST from 1,180

Result: Net price 1,000.00, tax 180.00.

Background

Adding tax is net x (1 + rate/100). Removing tax is gross / (1 + rate/100). The second formula is the one people get wrong: you must divide, not subtract 18% of the gross price. Subtracting 18% of 1,180 gives 967.60, which is incorrect.

In India, intra-state sales split GST equally into CGST and SGST, while inter-state sales charge IGST at the full rate. Rates differ by product category and country, so check your local tax authority for the correct rate.

Common mistakes

  • Subtracting the rate from a tax-inclusive price instead of dividing by 1 + rate.
  • Applying a rate that does not match the product category.
  • Rounding each line item and the invoice total inconsistently, which causes small mismatches.
