About Image Rotate

Toolium's Image Rotate Studio allows quick 90° clockwise and counter-clockwise turns as well as continuous fine-angle straightening. With the dynamic canvas expander and drafting grid overlay, you can level skewed horizons or rotate portrait/landscape captures without distortion.

How to use Image Rotate

  1. Upload an image.
  2. Rotate 90 degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise, or enter an exact angle.
  3. Use the grid overlay to level a horizon.
  4. Expand the canvas if you do not want corners cropped, then download.

Worked examples

Input: A portrait photo that opens sideways

Result: Rotate 90 degrees clockwise to fix it.

Input: A landscape photo with a 3 degree tilt

Result: Rotate by -3 degrees and use the grid to confirm the horizon is level.

Background

Right-angle rotations are lossless in pixel terms. Arbitrary angles require resampling, which slightly softens the image, and leave empty corners unless the canvas is expanded or the image is cropped.

Phones store orientation in EXIF metadata. Some viewers apply it and others ignore it, which is why a photo can look sideways in one app and correct in another.

Common mistakes

  • Rotating by a small angle and not cropping the empty corners.
  • Rotating the wrong direction. Check the sign of the angle.
  • Assuming the photo is wrong when the viewer ignores EXIF orientation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Expand Canvas and Crop mode?
Expand Canvas automatically resizes the canvas to ensure the entire rotated image remains visible, while Crop mode maintains the original bounding box.
Does rotating degrade image quality?
Exact 90°, 180°, and 270° rotations relocate pixels losslessly with zero quality reduction.
