About Image Blur & Redaction

Toolium's Image Blur & Redaction Studio provides multiple filters for de-emphasizing backgrounds or censoring sensitive information like faces, IDs, and license plates. Choose between smooth Gaussian softening, retro 8-bit mosaic pixelation, or solid privacy redaction bars, with selective regional box masks and instant before/after peek comparison.

How to use Image Blur & Redaction

  1. Upload an image.
  2. Choose Gaussian blur, mosaic pixelation or solid blackout.
  3. Draw a region to apply the effect to only part of the image, or apply it to the whole image.
  4. Hold the peek button to compare with the original, then download.

Worked examples

Input: A screenshot with an email address visible

Result: Draw a box over the address and choose solid blackout. The pixels in that area are replaced and cannot be recovered.

Background

Gaussian blur averages nearby pixels, and pixelation replaces blocks with a single color. Both reduce detail, but light blur or large pixel blocks can sometimes be partly reversed with software, especially for text.

For sensitive information such as IDs, card numbers and license plates, use the solid blackout, which replaces the pixels entirely. The edit happens in your browser, and the original file is not uploaded anywhere.

Common mistakes

  • Using a light blur to hide sensitive text. Use blackout instead.
  • Forgetting to check metadata such as EXIF location in the original photo.
  • Posting the original and the redacted copy together.
