About Color Picker

Toolium's Color Picker Studio is a precision color inspection and conversion utility. Sample colors directly from your screen or fine-tune exact channel values across HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, and CMYK formats. The studio automatically generates a 11-step tint and shade scale for design system tokenization and checks real-time WCAG 2.1 contrast compliance against dark and light surfaces.

How to use Color Picker

  1. Pick a color on the canvas, type a value, or use the eyedropper to sample from the screen.
  2. Read the same color in HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK.
  3. Check the 11-step tint and shade scale.
  4. Review the WCAG contrast result against light and dark surfaces.

Worked examples

Input: #FF8800

Result: RGB 255, 136, 0 and HSL 32 degrees, 100%, 50%.

Input: Black text on white

Result: A contrast ratio of 21:1, the maximum possible.

Background

HEX and RGB describe a color by its red, green and blue intensity. HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, which is easier for creating variations. CMYK is a print model, and conversion from RGB is approximate because screens and printers have different gamuts.

WCAG 2.1 requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text at level AA.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on CMYK values from a screen conversion for print without a proof.
  • Choosing text colors that look fine to you but fail the 4.5:1 contrast ratio.
  • Reading HSL lightness as perceived brightness. Yellow and blue at 50% look very different.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 'Pick Anywhere from Screen' eyedropper work?
In supported Chromium-based browsers, the EyeDropper API lets you sample any pixel directly from any window or application on your desktop.
What are tints and shades?
Tints are lighter variations created by blending with white, while shades are darker variations blended with black — essential for building accessible button hover and focus states.
