About Color Extractor
Toolium's Color Extractor uses advanced median-cut quantization and perceptual clustering to extract the most dominant and visually distinct color palettes from photos, branding graphics, and UI mockups. In addition to raw color extraction, the studio generates harmonic color schemes (Complementary, Analogous, Triadic) and provides one-click exports for CSS custom properties and Tailwind CSS configs.
How to use Color Extractor
- Upload an image.
- A palette of the dominant colors is extracted.
- Review the complementary, analogous and triadic harmonies.
- Export the colors as CSS variables, a Tailwind config or JSON.
Worked examples
Input: A product photo with a teal background and an orange object
Result: A palette led by teal and orange, with exports such as --color-1: #0f766e style CSS custom properties.
Background
Colors are found with median-cut quantization: the pixels are repeatedly split along the color channel with the widest range, and each group is averaged into one representative color. This keeps visually distinct colors rather than picking only the most frequent shade.
Results depend on the image. Photos with noisy backgrounds give a muddier palette than flat illustrations. Check contrast between text and background colors before using a palette in a design.
Common mistakes
- Taking colors from a heavily compressed image, which adds artifact colors.
- Using a palette without checking text contrast.
- Expecting an exact brand color from a photograph, which is affected by lighting.
