About Digital Storage Converter
Digital storage units measure computer data capacity.
• Binary Standard (IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 Bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB, 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. • Decimal Standard (SI): 1 KB = 1,000 Bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB, 1 TB = 1,000 GB. • 1 Byte = 8 Bits. Internet speeds are quoted in bits (Mbps), while files are measured in Bytes (MB).
How to use Digital Storage Converter
- Type the value you want to convert.
- Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you want, such as bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB or the binary KiB, MiB, GiB.
- Read the converted value instantly. Swap the units to convert the other way.
- Copy the result, or check other units listed in the results grid.
Worked examples
Input: 500 GB (decimal) to GiB
Result: About 465.66 GiB. This is why a drive sold as 500 GB shows less in some operating systems.
Input: 100 Mbps to MB/s
Result: 12.5 MB/s, because 8 bits make one byte.
Background
Two systems are in use. SI units are decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. IEC units are binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Drive makers use decimal, while many operating systems report binary but label it with the decimal names.
Network speeds are quoted in bits per second and file sizes in bytes. One byte equals eight bits, so divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.
Common mistakes
- Mixing GB and GiB. The gap grows from 2.4% at KB to about 10% at TB.
- Mixing bits and bytes. Mbps is not MB/s.
- Assuming a drive is defective because its reported size is below the label.
