About JSON to CSV

Converting structured JSON into CSV allows developers and analysts to easily open API responses in Excel, Google Sheets, or business intelligence pipelines. This studio supports deep nested object flattening (`user.address.city`), custom field delimiters, quoting policies, and union column discovery across inconsistent arrays.

How to use JSON to CSV

  1. Paste a JSON array of objects.
  2. Choose the delimiter and quoting style.
  3. Nested objects are flattened into dotted column names, and missing keys across rows get empty cells.
  4. Copy the CSV or download it for Excel or Sheets.

Worked examples

Input: [{"name":"Ada","address":{"city":"Paris"}},{"name":"Lin"}]

Result: Header name, address.city then rows Ada,Paris and Lin, with an empty city for Lin.

Background

CSV is flat while JSON is nested, so the converter flattens nested objects into column names such as address.city. Arrays are harder: they are usually serialized into a single cell or expanded into numbered columns.

The column set is the union of all keys across every row, so rows with fewer fields get blanks. Fields containing the delimiter, quotes or line breaks are quoted so spreadsheets read them correctly.

Common mistakes

  • Passing a single object instead of an array of objects.
  • Opening the file in Excel with the wrong delimiter for your locale.
  • Expecting deeply nested arrays to become neat columns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to nested JSON objects?
When 'Flatten nested keys' is enabled, child keys are flattened using dot notation (e.g. `user.profile.age`).
Can I convert JSON with inconsistent keys?
Yes! The converter automatically aggregates all unique keys across all objects in the array so no data columns are lost.
Can I export as TSV or semicolon-separated values?
Yes, select Tab (`\t`), Semicolon (`;`), or Pipe (`|`) as the separator from the controls panel.
