About Compress PDF
Toolium's Compress PDF Studio repacks the internal object streams and structural cross-references of PDF files to minimize file sizes for email sharing and web uploads without sending your sensitive documents to remote servers.
How to use Compress PDF
- Upload a PDF.
- Run the compression, which repacks the file's internal structure.
- Compare the new size with the original and preview the result.
- Download the smaller file.
Worked examples
Input: A PDF exported with redundant metadata and uncompressed objects
Result: A smaller file with identical page content.
Input: A PDF made of large scanned photos
Result: Little reduction, because the size comes from the image data, which is not re-encoded.
Background
This tool compresses structure: object streams, cross-reference tables and redundant metadata. It does not downsample the images inside, so the visual quality is unchanged, but the reduction is limited for scan-heavy files.
If an image-heavy PDF stays too large, convert pages to images with the PDF to Image tool, compress those, and rebuild the PDF with Image to PDF.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a large reduction on a scanned document.
- Compressing a PDF that is password protected without unlocking it first.
- Replacing the original before checking the compressed version opens correctly.
