About Average & Statistics Calculator

The average and statistics calculator takes any list of numbers separated by commas, spaces, tabs, or line breaks, and instantly computes comprehensive descriptive statistics.

Metrics Calculated: • Mean (Arithmetic Average): The sum of values divided by count. • Median: The central value of the sorted dataset. • Mode: The most frequently occurring number(s). • Standard Deviation & Variance: Measures of dataset spread and dispersion for both population (N) and sample (N-1). • Interquartile Range (IQR): The spread between the 25th (Q1) and 75th (Q3) percentiles. • Geometric & Harmonic Means: Specialized averages for exponential growth and rates.

How to use Average & Statistics Calculator

  1. Paste or type your numbers into the dataset box. Commas, spaces, tabs and line breaks all work as separators.
  2. Statistics update as you type: mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, variance and standard deviation.
  3. Check whether you need the sample (N-1) or population (N) standard deviation before copying a value.
  4. Copy the result you need or adjust the dataset and watch every figure recalculate.

Worked examples

Input: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

Result: Mean 18, median 15.5, no repeated value so no mode, range 38, sample standard deviation about 13.49, population standard deviation about 12.32.

Input: 2 2 3 9

Result: Mean 4, median 2.5, mode 2. The 9 pulls the mean well above the median, which hints at a skewed dataset.

Background

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value of the sorted list, or the average of the two middle values when the count is even. The mode is the most frequent value.

Standard deviation measures spread. The population version divides squared deviations by N and applies when your data is the whole group. The sample version divides by N-1 (Bessel's correction) and is the right choice when your data is a sample drawn from a bigger group. For small samples the two differ noticeably.

Common mistakes

  • Using population standard deviation on a sample. For survey or experiment data, use the sample value.
  • Reading the mean of skewed data as typical. Compare it with the median first.
  • Pasting numbers with thousands separators such as 1,200, which are read as two separate numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Mean and Median?
The mean is the mathematical average sensitive to extreme outliers. The median is the true middle value of sorted data, providing a more representative central metric when high or low outliers skew the average.
What is the difference between Sample and Population Standard Deviation?
Population standard deviation (σ) assumes you have all data points in existence (divided by N). Sample standard deviation (s) applies Bessel's correction (divided by N-1) to provide an unbiased estimate when working with a sample of a larger group.
Can I paste numbers directly from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes! The parser handles tabs, spaces, newlines, and commas seamlessly, allowing one-click copy-pasting from spreadsheet columns.
What are Geometric and Harmonic Means used for?
Geometric mean is ideal for compounding investment returns and growth percentages. Harmonic mean is used for averaging rates, speeds, and price-to-earnings ratios.
