About Remove Extra Spaces

Text copied from a PDF, a rich-text email, or an old document often carries whitespace artifacts that aren't visible until you try to search or reformat it: double spaces left over from typewriter-era typing conventions, tabs mixed in with spaces, trailing spaces at the end of lines, and long runs of blank lines from copy-paste. This tool cleans all of that up in one pass — it collapses any run of spaces or tabs within a line down to a single space, trims leading and trailing whitespace from every line, and caps consecutive blank lines at a maximum of one blank line between paragraphs.

It deliberately processes line by line rather than treating the whole text as one block, so intentional line breaks (like a list where each item is on its own line) are preserved — only the whitespace within and around each line is normalized, not the line structure itself. That's a different job than a full text reflow or a word-wrap tool.

This is commonly used before pasting text into a system that renders whitespace literally (like a `<pre>` block or a code comment), or before running a word count where inflated spacing would throw off character-based statistics.

How to use Remove Extra Spaces

  1. Paste the text.
  2. Choose what to clean: double spaces, tabs, trailing spaces and extra blank lines.
  3. Copy the cleaned text.

Worked examples

Input: Hello world. Next line

Result: Hello world. Next line

Background

Text pasted from PDFs, emails and old documents often contains invisible whitespace: runs of spaces, tabs, trailing spaces and many blank lines. These break searches and make diffs noisy.

Collapsing whitespace is safe for prose, but not for content where spacing is meaningful, such as code, Markdown tables, YAML or preformatted text.

Common mistakes

  • Cleaning code or YAML where indentation matters.
  • Removing intentional paragraph breaks along with extra blank lines.
  • Missing non-breaking spaces, which look like spaces but are different characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this remove line breaks along with extra spaces?
No — line breaks are preserved. Only the spaces and tabs within each line and at its edges are collapsed and trimmed; blank lines are capped at one in a row rather than removed entirely.
What happens to tab characters?
Tabs are treated the same as spaces: any mix of tabs and spaces within a line is collapsed down to a single regular space.
Will three or more blank lines in a row become completely empty?
No, they're collapsed down to exactly one blank line rather than removed, which keeps a visual paragraph break in place without leaving large empty gaps.
Does it trim spaces from the very start and end of the whole text?
Yes, indirectly — since every line has its leading and trailing whitespace trimmed, the first and last lines of the text end up trimmed as well.
